Tempie was rocking in her seat after her third shot of Jack. Cotter sulked off toward the bar over an hour ago, so Tempie and I were alone for the most part. As I return to the table with round number four, I see Cotter towing Tempie onto the dance floor. My blood runs hot when I see his hands on her. Tempie’s head flies back in a laugh. I tense at the sight. From all other interactions between the two of them, I was surprised that she even agreed to dance with him. Maybe I missed something. Maybe she does like him.

I sit brooding in my chair, watching her sway along to the music. Cotter moving his hands over her body, her constantly moving them back to her safe zone.  Her eyes find mine and she gives me a shy smile, nodding in a way that tells me she wants me to cut in. I stand and make my way over only to stop short. Cotter has pulled her in and is kissing her cheek. His eyes are on fire and blazing right at me. Tempie is trying to push away from him but he holds firm. The challenge in his eyes is directed at me, daring me to try to take what he has claimed as his.

Tempie continues to fight him, unable to wiggle free of his long arms. I take several steps in his direction my arms straining against the unyielding fabric of the stuffy shirt I wore to impress her. I grab his shoulder and reel back, but before I release hell on my friends face, he drops to the floor. Cotter is curled into a ball holding his groin. I look at Tempie.  She is standing, huffing deep breaths fist balled tightly at her side. Her gaze falls on mine and a smile twists across her lips. I walk over, reaching her just as the massive frame of Joe, the bouncer, approaches.

“Little lady, I am afraid we have a three take down limit.” He smiles at her, shaking his head. “Rayce you better take this little slugger out of here before he collects himself.” Joe nods down toward Cotter. “I saw what went down, but he’s the boss’s nephew.” Joe shrugs and turns back toward his perch by the door.
