“Are you decent?” Detective Quinn
asks, hesitating in the doorway to my room. I look up from the book I borrowed
from the floors waiting room and smile.
“Yeah, I am sorry about earlier. I am usually not that jumpy.” I
feel my cheeks heat as a Cheshire grin spreads across his face.
“It’s ok. I would be jumpy too if I had been through what you
have.” He steps into the room but does not come too close. I look him up and
down. He has his aviator glasses on, and light colored jeans with a dark V-neck
tee that looks painted onto his chest .I can see a sharp black spike of a tattoo
poking out of the shirt on his neckline. He looks a lot more like a MMA fighter than a
he does a cop.
“What can I help you with?” I ask smiling back at him. I know why
he is here. It is standard procedure to be interviewed by the police after an
ordeal such as mine. However, I know little to nothing outside of the dark room
and green light. Truthfully, I don’t even know where I was found.
“I know this may be difficult. However, I need to ask you a few
questions about your abduction. What do you remember about the day you were
taken?” He cocks his head back as if it pains him to ask the question.
“Not much really.” My face heats at my coming admission. “To tell
you the truth, I was pretty drunk. It was the last day of Burning Man, and we
were trying to let loose. We had finished off a bottle of Jack Daniels and had
stopped at a paint party to dance before heading to the pyre. They handed us
some weird glowing drinks that looked like antifreeze before we left. We were
about a hundred yards away when Sara fell. I thought she tripped, but then she
started seizing. Not long after, I blacked out too.”
